Next weekend I’ll be in Pittsburgh for the National Cartoonist Society’s Reuben Awards, which are the Oscars of cartooning. (Nope, I’m not nominated; never have been.) It’s a private affair, open only to members, but this year on Sunday May 26 the Toonseum in Pittsburgh will offer an event open to the public. The information is here, and I’ll be on a panel from 3 to 4 in the afternoon.

I’ve completed the cover of the 18th “Kevin & Kell” collection “Predator Camp” which will be on sale here in June. It contains every strip from the calendar year of 2011, plus the running commentary provided by Lindesfarne’s Blog as she adds background details to each story. Now I’m working on the back cover, with the patrons gathered around a campfire.

Stephanie Gladden of “Girls of Monster Paradise” has graciously agreed to write the foreword.

Earlier I mentioned a new project that I’m creating. It’s an interactive app featuring Dethany of “On the Fastrack” as she adopts a 1940s private eye persona and solves a crime in cyberspace. It will be called “Dethany in Virtu/Noir” and readers will be able to make choices determining the direction of the plot. You can watch its development on its Tumblr blog.

Duel in the Somme,” the comic book that I illustrated in 2010, is available for the Kindle here.

Looking ahead, here’s my con schedule for the summer. My plans have firmed up, and I’ll definitely be attending the following:
Anthrocon, Pittsburgh PA July 5-7
Comic-Con, San Diego CA July 18-21
Otakon, Baltimore MD, Aug. 9-11
DragonCon, Atlanta GA, Aug. 30-Sept. 2
(For the cons in San Diego, Baltimore and Atlanta I’ll be accompanied by Dethany and Lenore.)

Way back in 1979 I did a 24-page comic book for my college paper, The Auburn Plainsman. You can see it in its entirety here.

Finally, the Bill Holbrook site is now live here. At this central portal you will be able to conveniently access the existing sites of all three of my strips, plus the New Bill Holbrook Store. Every weekend I’ll update the news section, and it also has links to all the social media outlets that my characters are writing. Please explore, and I hope it’s a pleasant surfing experience.

Last Sunday I asked you, the readers, to assist me on confirming that “Kevin & Kell” is now the longest continually running webcomic. After a lot of legwork on your part I believe that I can reasonably make that claim. I know that there were many other webcomics that preceded “Kevin & Kell’s” debut in September 1995, but to my knowledge all of those have either ended, gone into reruns or have experienced a significant hiatus. (And no, “Dilbert,” a newspaper strip like “Fastrack” doesn’t count.) :)

Congratulations are in order for Tara Dillon, whose wedding dress design will be worn at Samantha’s wedding in “Safe Havens.” Thanks go to her and also to the creators of the other six entries, and to everyone who voted with their Likes on the strip’s Facebook page. I genuinely and sincerely appreciate the efforts of all involved! The dress will appear in the strip on June 12.

Pencil Rough Productions is starting out by selling my comic strip collections, but it will soon encompass much more. One of the things I’m excited about is a special project that I’ll announce on this space next week. As it develops you’ll be able to see it take shape on a blog I’ll set up on Tumblr.

As Kell Dewclaw is discovering in “Kevin & Kell,” launching a start-up business is a challenging experience. I’m discovering that myself as I launch Pencil Rough Productions, which will be my own publishing imprint from here on. There are a number of hurdles to clear; some procedural (Thanks, LegalZoom!) and financial (ISBN numbers aren’t cheap) so to address the latter I’m issuing an appeal to you, the readers. You can help me get started by simply by purchasing one of my collections here. As you can see, only “Kevin & Kell” books are available for now, but I’m working with King Features to get my “Fastrack” and “Safe Havens” books up as well. Meanwhile, the eighteenth collection of”Kevin & Kell” strips, entitled “Predator Camp,” will be out in June, and will encompass the complete calendar year of 2011. If you’d like your anthropomorphic likeness to appear in a group pose on the back cover (as the species of your choice), just sign up for the Sunday Family Dinner or Omnivore Feast patron levels here, by March 31.

During the con I penciled and inked the cover art for the eighteenth collection of”Kevin & Kell” strips, entitled “Predator Camp.” It’ll be out in July, and will encompass the complete calendar year of 2011. If you’d like your anthropomorphic likeness to appear in a group pose on the back cover (as the species of your choice), just sign up for the Sunday Family Dinner or Omnivore Feast patron levels here, by March 31.

Meanwhile, you still have time to design a wedding dress for “Safe Havens”‘s Samantha for her June 15 marriage to Dave. Please send me your artistic creations via E-mail to bholbrook1(at)gmail.com, and I’ll post them on the Safe Havens Facebook site. The design with the most Likes will be the one Samantha wears in the strip, and the winning designer will receive the original art for the strip for June 15. The voting closes on April 15.
